While the story had very little actual dialogue and was confusing at times, the beauty of the graphic novel adds a depth that pulls together all of the strange, the other worldly. There is a dreamy quality to choices made, the colours of the past, the darkness of the present. Laura continuously hiding behind her costumes and Teresa pushing at the claustrophobia of her home. The characters in this graphic novel project themselves quite well. From the beginning you know Gloria is a bit heartless from her capturing a moth/butterfly in her box and leaving it without breathing holes. She smothers, Laura should never have trusted her with her music and her band. But Laura is so desperate for connection, for someone who can understand her. Christina is a yes girl, kind of the glue of the band, but she also does nothing to stop Gloria's heartlessness. While Laura clearly has body issues, or self issues, in which she must always be acting the part of someone else (she has no sense of self). Teresa feels trapped, but tries to find a confidant in her younger sister (always to be disappointed by her sister breaking her trust). She is similar to Laura, looking for that connection, for someone who appreciates her mind, her dark poetry, her love of the macabre. This graphic novel highlights trust issues, loneliness, isolation, self image, and the desire to create something for the world that is part of your soul. It can be stifling trying to fit yourself into a world that does not accept who you truly are, the only way to deal with it may be finding others who are can commiserate, who are just as weird as you are. Do not go into this graphic novel thinking the story will make sense, just let the story sweep you away and then repeat, repeat, repeat. It's a book that you can read several times and every time will feel different or new. It is very romantic in that way. A beautiful fevered dream that sometimes overwhelms with emotion, depth, sadness, reflection, and hope.
