The book was well crafted, with a sad back story and lots of commentary on the treatment of women and children in Victorian England. Kate has more freedom, but only because she is a widowed woman of means and can therefore push boundaries (like running her late husband's newspaper and writing her own pieces for it). I enjoyed the connection between Kate and Lord Valentine (Val). They are like brother and sister, completely loyal and protective of one another. Kate and Andrew have good chemistry, but sometimes it seems their affection for one another was too rushed. I would have liked a little more bickering and a little less of Andrew's do as I sayness. It just seemed as though they quickly went from rivals to devoted suitors. It could also have been that I like more spice in my enemies to lovers dramas. The killings were quite gruesome and the plot tracked well with why they happened. I had a feeling about who the killer was, but there were added twists and tangles that played well with confusing the reader. I also loved that Kate was her own hero the entire novel, working hard to free herself from societal norms as well as literal bonds. She never assumed she would be saved and would cringe at the suggestion she needed saving in the first place. She was fiercely independent and Andrew realizes this and loves her more because of it. Andrew is a rational thinker, having come up from the streets and a family shunned by their peerage. He is smart, but he is also honest, and is disgusted by the underhandedness of the police. Disgusted by what some officers are willing to do, as well as the Home Office, in order to look good or appease the people. He is about doing things right, and that is why he becomes so angry at Kate's article, because it causes officers to do shoddy work. He realizes it is not her fault, but is angry at the situation that arose and therefore finds it hard to distance Kate from his feelings of anger. However, he realizes quickly that they work well together, both having insights into different aspects of society and the different sexes. So, while the novel was not as sexy as I was hoping, I enjoyed the story and Kate and Andrew were wonderful characters that charmed me from the beginning. As well, this is dual perspective, my favourite kind of romance novel. I love being in the head of both main characters, seeing how they begin to fall in love with each other. So, pick this up if you like your mystery with a side of romance. Thank you so much to Forever publishing for sending me a physical copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
