A very steamy story, once you get through a lot of preamble. This book had a lot of slow progress at the beginning. I found myself drifting off and having to reread parts. But, as this is a four book series it makes sense it was so slow burn. Although, maybe it could have been reduced to three books? I felt the momentum dragging and yet did not get enough of all the characters. I found Proserpina to be a bit annoying actually, so her being the voice of the story made it harder to connect. She felt like such a ho-hum character, only of use in a sexual nature and not for much else, no real growth, no real drama (even for being a submissive in BDSM). I also found it a little unbelievable that they were all technically virgins...the priest makes sense, I suppose, and it all worked for the narrative; but, somehow, it still felt a bit forced. Personally, my favourite of the storylines was the weird hate/obsession that was flowing between Saint and Auden. They could not stand to be around each other, yet could not be separated. There was a past hinted at and all I wanted was more, more, more. As well, I loved the interactions between Rebecca and Delphine, who apparently fight each other on everything, but seem to be the two most capable of showing care and kindness to both each other and their other friends. I felt Becket had little action within the plot, but maybe he will have a bigger role in the future. I loved the idea of an old chapel being a sort of sacred space for many reasons, and it being reused by this group for their own purposes. It becomes hallowed ground for their ritual marriage. It was all very fitting and fell into the realm of gothic romance quite nicely. The atmosphere of Thornchapel was ominous and it did loom over everything our characters did and encountered. Thornchapel felt like a living, breathing entity and I could picture so clearly in my mind the altar, the crumbling walls, where a door may be... I will say that once the steam hits it sizzles off the page. And I mean that it lasts a while, and just grows and grows in kink and sensuality. So, stick with it if that is what you are looking for. The background mystery is interesting and I am intrigued by their parents connections, their rituals, and what really happened to Poe's mother. So, I have been hooked enough to want to continue with the series.
