This series is phenomenal and I encourage everyone to read both Akata Witch and Akata Warrior. Or, listen to the audiobooks as I did, which added another level of story immersion. Sunny is such a powerful character, who constantly questions her worth. She needs to find her own power, outside of her spirit self (Anyanwu). She is a warrior, but what does that really mean? And, why is she having dreams of a smoking city? This second installment started a little slow, took more time to get into than the first; however, it featured a lot of excellent plot points and character development. Sunny became more connected to her older brother, found herself more connected with her Oha coven (Chichi, Sasha, and Orlu), and learned to accept who she was and what she was capable of as a Leopard person and as herself. The novel also tackles the difference between a good society, one that teaches you, embraces you, makes you stronger and better, versus a society that pushes you to be one of them through coercion and force. The Leopard people may face dangers and have punishments for going against their codes, in order to keep lamb (normal) society safe, but they are caring; while, the fraternities that Sunny's older brother is pushed into are about breaking someone, about making you do things that are awful in order to benefit the leaders of the fraternity. Sunny must face dangers she could never have imagined; from coming face to face with a djinn, to confronting the great spider, Udide. Sunny is tasked with the near impossible, and must once again rely not on the older generation, but on herself and her friends. They risk life and limb for each other and often find that they are special, more special than they ever could have imagined. I really liked the conflict from the side story of Sasha and Sunny's older brother fighting over Chichi. Plus, I will always love the steady, beautiful, trusting relationship between Sunny and Orlu. The atmosphere of this novel is magical, while being ominous. The world that Nnedi Okorafor created is intricate, detailed, mysterious and the characters are loveable and sympathetic.
