By the end, the outcome is the only one that would have been acceptable to the reader (because you have become the robber, a hostage, the police). This is a novel about desperation, fear, kindness, and hope. What started as a desperate, if dumb, act turned into a way to connect, to heal, and to rebuild. So, while it was about a hostage situation, it was really about the disparate lives of all those attending the apartment viewing. It highlights their loneliness, their inability to reach out and share what is eating them up inside. But, the armed robber quite literally forces them to confront their own insecurities, helping to heal wounds. The bank robber is made to be sympathetic right away, so you are never in doubt about how you should feel about the situation. What they did is wrong, but the book focuses on asking the reader how they would have handled their issues. What would you do for the ones you love? It reminds the reader of all of the dumb decisions they have made in the past, of regrets they wish they could correct. Of an idea that was acted on and did not turn out quite how the reader would have liked. While I had a hard time getting into the format of the novel, eventually I was sucked into the story and trying to figure out the truth of it all before the police. I would replay what was said, check the interviews, hope for the best outcome. I was pulled in to this intricately woven story of a single day in the lives of people dealing with their own anxieties. How complicated it all was, but how simple their decisions became as they worked through their pain. A beautiful story about connection. This book may not be for everyone, because of the format, but I think the basics of the story are easily accessible and understandable. We all experience trauma in our lives, we all must deal with hardships and pain, we all must somehow work through our pasts in order to heal and have a better future. I recommend this book to anyone looking for introspection and connection.
