The setting was fascinating. Beetle's teacher/caregiver is a goblin and they live in a simple country home. The whole world is shaped around magic and the supernatural. Weird creatures make many appearances, as the community members of Beetle's world. Skeletons, ghosts, ghouls, giant insects, pumpkin headed humans, fantastically imagined. A perfect blend of other worldly and reality, with baristas selling coffee and giant worms selling stuffed animals. Beetle and Kat's relationship is so realistic. From being best friends, to strangers, to feeling strange and out of place around each other. Their families have differing opinions on magical education, which creates friction and a good base for the storyline. I enjoy that they can argue, but truly come together in the face of adversity. They blend well together, one trying to be more powerful, the other trying to hide how powerful she is. Blob Ghost is a wonderful character. Funny, light hearted, turns into anything. Blob Ghost lends humour to an otherwise tragic story of two friends losing each other to the dark side of magic and power. I also enjoyed trying to find out about Blob Ghost's past, who Blob Ghost really is. Blob Ghost's purity lightens Beetle and Kat. This graphic novel deals a lot with familial obligation, ambition, privilege, and assumptions about what is powerful. The Hollowbones, or more specifically Kat's aunt, believes she is superior to goblins because her magic is more "popular" and seems more fantastical, while goblin magic in her mind is baser (because it is not showy and revolves around potions). This assumption is due to goblins being humble and unassuming, when in fact they are quite powerful and respected. Meanwhile, Kat's aunt is willing to use Kat and her power to become more powerful, leeching off of her and hurting her. I highly recommend this beautifully illustrated, wonderfully magical story about two women finding the power within themselves to become who they truly are.
