I read this book so quickly. Jack and Simon have such a caring and kind relationship. The two of them help each other to face their own insecurities and realize how wonderful they are as themselves. Jack becomes aware of how ableist he is towards his relationship with Simon and works to better understand and to change his thinking in order to see from Simon's point-of-view. Meanwhile, Simon is grateful to be seen and to be understood without having to try to change who he is (which he has done in the past to terrible results). Simon is very negative towards himself, so it is nice when he starts to give himself some leeway and to really feel comfortable with Jack to speak and be honest. I love their companionship as much as their romance. That their love of animals is a love language to each other. I especially enjoyed seeing Simon's communication improve when he started showing emotion through touch. He could convey so much he could not say by grabbing a hand, stroking a cheek, squeezing a thigh. A beautiful form of love and tenderness. This book also showed familial love between Jack and his brother (Charlie) and Simon and his Grandmother. These relationships were pivotal to these two and their relationship to each other. When Jack or Simon had an issue they could talk to someone and gain some much needed perspective. Jack must regain his trust in others after the hurt he went through with his best friend. He also finds himself once again seeking the comfort of drawing, both for himself and those who love his stories. Simon is also dealing with the loss of his beloved Grandfather, moving in with his Grandmother to support her in her time of grief. And this book does not shy away from the grief aspect, it is messy and comes on in waves, and sometimes you are angry at those who leave you and sometimes you just need to break something. But there are times too when happiness bleeds through those darker moments. Just truly enjoyed and loved this book.
