This was such a wonderful book. First of all I loved all the movie quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Loved the curated playlist at the end. Loved the references throughout to some of my favourite rom-coms. But, I also loved Liz and Wes as characters. They were so lively, they jumped right off the page. This book actually made me feel like I was watching a movie. But there was so much more to the book than a cheesy rom-com. At the heart this was a book about grief, about how it never leaves us and sometimes can come back and impact a person who believes they have learned to sort of live with it in the background. Liz is constantly reminded of her mother and no one around her seems to notice or acknowledge her pain, except for Wes. Even her father is angry with her for not involving her stepmother (who Liz actually loves) to do mother/daughter things. He does not even consider how it might make her feel, the double pain of not having her mom and the guilt for not being happy with her stepmom there instead. I did find some parts to be repetitive and I was quite frustrated with Liz not wanting to change herself for a guy, but doing it anyways. Luckily, Wes actually finds her style endearing and suggests things he knows she would like. Michael is a very bland love interest, but I did like when Liz and him were finally honest with each other. Liz has such immense character growth, acknowledging her pain, her lies, and her inability to share with others what she is feeling (which may have actually helped her and stopped the shenanigans from going too far). Wes was such a fun character. You first are introduced to him through Liz's eyes, as her rival and kind of an easy going, care free, popular guy. He seems like a jerk. But, as we experience who he is with Liz and others, as she begins to get to know him better. He becomes so caring, so observant, popular because he is a great guy, and he truly cares for Liz. So much that he works his hardest to help her to get another guy. Just an amazing male character who touches your heart. This was a cute young adult novel that would honestly make the perfect movie, and I hope that maybe one day it will be a movie I can lose myself in (like Liz does with her rom-coms).
