The world building was phenomenal, where each planetary system has a governing body and the details of each ruling body were all well explained. Umber is ruthless, Archon was technologically advanced but not prepared for war, Corinth is the only planetary system not ruled by blood right, but by an elected official. Bloodright means you have the blood of rulers or power in you, and could also be attributed to mob rules in certain cities or neighbourhoods. Bloodrights are powerful enough to dictate loyalty. Ettian is an interesting character. He lived for a couple years on the streets of Rana before being shuttled into the foster care system created by Umber, after conquering Archon. He has seen the Umber propaganda espousing that Archon citizens are better off under Umber rule. He is torn between his past and his present. This makes him very complex and generates empathy for him. I did not particularly like Gal as a character, but maybe if he has a viewpoint in the next novel there might be more sympathy for him. He seems hypocritical and has no regard for the life Ettian has had to endure after Umber attacked. He is sheltered and sort of bland. Ettian's devotion to him is questionable, as we are given no real backstory as to why he is enamored. So they bunked together, so their friends, what makes Gal worth giving up everything for, if Gal would not do the same for Ettian (or give him the same leeway if Ettian has a secret past). Wen Iffan though, an amazing character I could not get enough of and wish that there was more about her. She has quite the past and her backstory clicked so well with Ettian. Their closeness helped Ettian to be more vulnerable and reveal bits of himself that he had kept buried for so long. Wen is the friend Ettian needs, with her brashness and brazenness. She is unafraid to be herself and fight for what she believes in, she pushed Ettian to confront his feelings about Umber and what he lost. Also, the Archon Knights had me so intrigued. The tech behind the suits, the hero worship, the amazing abilities and swords. Sign me up! I want all of that in the second book. An exciting, spacey romp; which is sure to offer tons more action and adventure in the next two installments. So strap on your helmet and get ready to enjoy the ride!
