Firstly, it was so nice to be in the orbit of Ronan Lynch again. To experience his brand of angry living. He is one of my favourite characters; he says what he means, cares only for those he loves, and is sharp edged. He dreams things into being, but also wishes for more. Maggie Stiefvater's writing is poetic, emotive, sometimes a guttural moan or shriek. The story sinks its beak into you, not releasing you until the nail biting conclusion. I also loved being in Declan Lynch's head. To experience the older brother, what he endures to hold their small family together. What he has sacrificed and continues to sacrifice for the other two surviving Lynch's. He is a mix of hurt, sadness, and conviction. He gives nothing of himself away, cleanly severing his emotions from his outward appearance. This story was such a ride. Twists, turns, great new characters and a plot that has your pulse racing as storylines begin to converge. You question this secret Government agency, because something about their methods seems shaky and suspect. But, you cannot help but like Carmen Farooq-Lane, who genuinely wants to save the world, trusting the Government (even with how they use the visionaries). I am deeply invested in this series now, I want to know what happens. I hope the Lynch boy are okay, they have already suffered enough. I hope Jordan and Hennessey (a new favourite duo) can make things work. I love that dynamic, of the copies being so similar in appearance to Hennessey, but only really portraying certain aspects of her personality (somehow becoming a different person). I do not know whether to trust Bryde or not, but I am intrigued to lean more about him and how he can connect to other dreamers. A fantastic start to this trilogy; although, maybe not enough Adam. It was lyrical, haunting writing that puts one in mind of epic paintings, bard like poetry, and quests that could mean the beginning of something new and extraordinary or the very end of the world.
