This was such a witty, funny, charming story of a devout muslim woman trying to find true love. This involves family hijinx galore, including a perstering mother, an overbearing friend, and a cousin who thinks she knows what is best for Samira. Meanwhile, Samira just wants to find someone genuine, who she enjoys spending time with and loves Princess Bride almost as much as she does. Samira is such a quirky, fun character that often likens what is happening to her to sappy rom-coms. She has great quotes, is kind and considerate to her friends, but also is hardest on herself. She holds herself up to an impossible standard, which is only reinforced by her cousin Lara not giving her immediate support upon meeting Menem, and when her best friend Hakeem keeps picking apart her actions as being untoward. I loved how Menem could see all that Samira did and sacrificed for her family, how he could see her underestimate herself and her own worth. He is forthright with her about how amazing she is and forces Samira to rethink her own perceptions. A relationship that helps you shine, be yourself, and pushes you to consider your own self worth is the best kind there is. Also, how stinking cute are they "bumping" into each other for coffee all the time and the blushing. Adorable! Also, this book had such great character growth, especially between Samira and her dreaded cousin Zahra. I also liked how honest Samira was with her cousins about hurts and judgements. Family should be able to listen and apologize when lines are crossed. I was quite frustrated with Lara always budding in to Samira's life, but I liked how that story was handled and how the two cousins worked out their argument. This was just such a witty and adorable romance, that really was focused on Samira's character and her learning to trust in herself and grasp her own dreams without worrying about what other people will think. It was also nice to see her so conscious of her faith and making sure that whoever she ended up marrying knew she was devout.
