Cummings was both an artist and a poet, which you can see in the way he approached his poetry. Each poem is like its own piece of artwork, certain lines are splashes of colour, words are details, and the subject matter is often presented in a disjointed cubist way. His poetry is very visual, in that he takes language and re-purposes it, re-positions it and re-envisions it. Cummings shifts the readers perspective, making them fall upwards into his poems. His work is fantastical, hard, but the imagery is sensational and the brush strokes forceful. His use of nature pulls the reader into an image, dips you into a disjointed canvas, envelopes you in Cummings love of cubism and futurism. Cummings was unafraid of being different, and, because of this, his poems are still well loved. In this volume, we are introduced to quite a few of the topics that Cummings approached in his poetry; from love, to satire, to prostitution. He was not afraid to talk about sex, life and death. He also was not afraid of calling out writers and politicians on their bull. He also does not title his works, or the titles are the very first lines of his poems. Sometimes there are parenthesis, sometimes periods, or sometimes just one letter. It is eccentric and brilliant. Some of my favourite poems in this volume are: "what if a much of a which of a wind", "when faced called flowers float out of the ground", "the sky", "if there are any heavens my mother will(all by herself)have", "my love is building a building", "silently if,out of knowable", "All in green went my love riding", "enter no(silence is the blood whose flesh", "all nearness pauses, while a star can grow", and "in time of daffodils (who know". My favourite line from the volume, which stuck with me even after shutting the book, is: "-time is a tree(this life one leaf)" from the poem "as freedom is a breakfastfood". I strongly suggest taking a reading journey through some Cummings poetry. This volume is a wonderful selection of his works, taking in the vast breath of his poetry.
