Nancy was in an afterlife sort of world, which hinted at being the Underworld from Greek mythology (with Hades and Persephone). There she was able to be still, to exist without having to perform the task of perfect daughter, perfect "girl". Her door brought her to a place where her asexuality was welcome. I also liked the explanation of why more girls find these doors than boys, because they are less likely to be missed. Girls who wander off, or meander to one of these doors, are not noticed as missing until they are well and truly lost. Boys are louder, take up more space, and are therefore easily missed. As well, if these doors are meant to show a child a reprieve from their parents or society's expectations of them, than girls and/or those in the LGBTQ2IA+ community are more likely to need them. Girls have so many expectations and confinements placed on them from birth, and less of a voice in which to combat these outdated roles. The story was quick, but also twisted and horrific. A good foil for these kids, to find out who would want to murder their friends and why. The plot and characters were captivating, the story flowed well, and I felt deep empathy for these children who want nothing more than to return to the place they felt they most belonged. When these kids no longer fit into the perfect image carved out for them by their families, they were tossed aside and sent somewhere to be forgotten. It is sad, it is cruel, the ability for any parent, or loved one, to wilfully misunderstand their own children and make their love conditional on these children being "cured" of their delusions. Again, it's these unwarranted expectations that families place on their children, these outdated gender roles, the heteronormativity that society has instilled in all of us, which confines us to a life we all wish to escape by stumbling upon a door to somewhere better. Somewhere that knows the truth within our hearts, which echoes our desires to be who we are without fear. I am quite excited to continue with this series, to see what kind of doors and paths open to this group of lovely, dark, hopeful kids.
