Meanwhile, Lord Balam of Cuecola has started using dark magic to dream walk as the Jaguar (an ancient power). He is hoping to take over Tova with the help of the Spear Maidens and the Teek. But he always has more secrets that he holds close and he always deals in lies. He makes promises on a whim, ones he knows he will never follow through on. This book did not suffer from second book syndrome. The plot picked up quickly, the pace held throughout, and the characters all had important arcs and growth. Each plot had me gripped and I did not feel anything was worth skipping or should have been left out. Everything was important to the world building and the background machinations. Serapio is lost at the beginning, not sure how to live when he thought he would die, but by the end he is full of purpose. Naranpa is determined to lead at the beginning, to save their world, but slowly realizes maybe she first needs to save herself. Xiala (my favourite of all time) learns that she must confront her past in order to secure her future. While Okoa questions his loyalty and the role of the Gods when it comes to the lives of mortals. I am full invested and love the world building. Tova is made up of sky clans that have giant flying beasts to guide and protect them. The Spear Maidens were taken down in a previous battle, but are trying to reforge their rights to their home. But we also have Lord Balam and his contingent of Cuecolan merchant lords who wish to take Tova and carve pieces for themselves to make more profit. Meanwhile, the Teek (mermaid women? sirens?) have somehow come into contact with the Spear Maidens and have decided to team up with their efforts at establishing their rightful place. This is a story full of political intrigue, magic, love, and loyalty. Each of the main characters must battle a force on the horizon that threatens their lives and the lives of those they care deeply about. For, the Jaguar is coming and how will these four fare against a ruthless, relentless, cunning villain?
