This series is so phenomenal and this third book may be my favourite yet. This novel is an homage to Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. However, do not think that means it follows that plotline or premise exactly. This novel has a different crime and new twists and turns throughout. Plus, Daisy and Hazel working in secret makes for many humorous and unforgettable scenes. I especially liked their claiming they were playing a game and Hazel was Melusine (only they would use an unconventional character as their cover). I loved the two cases at once, one of murder and one of a spy. They seemed to intersect and diverge and then reconnect. It made for a very fast moving and engrossing read. These stories will never leave you bored and Hazel's voice as she recounts the facts keeps you invested in what the two girls find. Once again Daisy often discounts Hazel, but she is growing and becoming a better person as she continues to see Hazel is, in fact, her equal. Together they form a whole, who take the pieces of a seemingly easy case and peel away the layers to reveal the completely sordid truth. I particularly loved the addition of Hazel's father, an imposing, yet intelligent man who wants what is best for Hazel to be accepted by and get ahead in British society. I like that he is a kind of foil, as Hazel must fight with her proper daughter instincts to prove her worth as a detective. But I also like that he is also very smart and pushes the boundaries when it comes to his and Hazel's treatment by those on the train, showing their worth and strengths. The location, on the train, also made for a charged and cramped atmosphere with lots of odd and suspect characters. The girls also find out they are not the only junior detectives on board, with an American would be Pinkerton also on the murderers trail. Where Hazel is happy to find someone else like them, Daisy is annoyed at having someone else to work around or with. But, they manage to find common ground and help each other where they can. Ultimately proving that, once again, Wells and Wong are the superior Detective Society.
