Rags is as sympathetic and stubborn as ever, with a knack for getting herself into and out of trouble. She is likable, the reader cannot help but cringe for her, root for her and hope for her. She continues to think of nothing but saving her family and anyone she thinks needs her help, often at the expense of herself. Completely selfless, while still being afraid, she is a true hero. Her relationships with Colton and Henny add the perfect amount of drama and intrigue. They are her enemy, while also being her ally. It is often hard to pin down their motives and her ability to trust them, when faced with the darkest part of them. This just makes her all the more complex as a character. While I do not particularly like Colton, because he seems so deceptive to everyone around him and leaves this reader with a sense of unease that he may be in all of this for reasons beyond what he says, but Rags relies on him and trusts him. Henny, on the other hand, is a man who hides his emotions well, he covers them up with his Kingdom approved uniform. He mentions his disgust with elements of his job, but also continues to ask Rags to understand his world. He often takes pity on Rags and saves her life several times, with no clear reason. The two of them bicker and somehow make each other better, while also providing each other with a shoulder to lean on. I found their interactions were my favourite of the novel, with their cute domestic scenes, their shared love of Tilly (the three-legged dog) and their learning to accept and understand each other. While they both come from different worlds, they are both strong of character and simple in their desires and needs. Their differences bond them and their shared love certain characters solidifies their connection. I am completely #teamoreson. This novel is harsh, vivid, gory, terrifying. It shows the power of those highest in The Kingdom. The corruption, the sadistic evil of each of them. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely", has never been more true. However, this novel also has hope, the hope that even a single individual is strong enough to stand up for what is right and make a difference. That a single seed of rebellion will help an entire garden of resistance grow. I am very excited for the next novel in The Snow Spark Saga, Stars Over Zephyr. I was given a copy of this ebook by The Parliament House in exchange for an honest review.
