This book highlights the evils of colonialism and white supremacy. It holds a mirror up to our society and how BIPOC people are treated and struggle daily in a society that continuously works against them. The oppression, the violence, the hate they must endure. It was so well written, so immersive and powerful, there was no way to avoid caring deeply for Elimina and her life. How it continues to spiral further and further out of her control. While so many awful, unimaginable things happen to Elimina, and all those in the system with her, the novel also has a spark of hope throughout. That there is such love and community to be found by those at the school, or at the Riverside home for troubles girls, or even in the Gutter (where the Sossi live and work off their debt). Mainlanders continuously try to separate, to strip the Sossi or their heritage, their past, their history, their family, because all of those things make a person stronger. When you have others to love, to care for, it can be dangerous, but it can also be powerful! Elimina starts as a scared child, not knowing anything about her past, only knowing the Mainland and the people who prosper there off the backs of Gutter people. But, as the novel progresses, and after being put through one trauma after another, Elimina sheds her past naive self and fights for what she hopes to have. She fights for a life she longs for and not the life planned for her by a Government using and abusing others. Elimina's true power is in her words, her story, the story of those in the Gutter. Sharing those stories and forcing Mainlanders to confront their racism, their blatant abuse of power, and their past and continued atrocities against the Sossi. Highly, highly suggest reading this fabulous book!
