This graphic novel is so heartwarming. There are moments of anger and hurt, but more often than not there is happiness and love. Nick telling his mom was such a tear jerker moment, bursting with love. It makes the reader yearn for a world where who you love or your sexuality does not need to be "outed," where love is love. Nick and Charlie is a novella that takes place after this graphic novel. It happens just before Nick is due to leave for University. It is short and sweet, but deals with the hard topic of what happens to high school romances when one of the couple leaves for University. Charlie begins to spiral into anxiety thinking about Nick leaving for University. He begins to feel "left behind" and dreads any talk about University. He is also excited for Nick and realizes he is being selfish, so he does not bring up his anxieties. This leads to issues between the couple that boil over at an end of year party. Nick and Charlie continuously show themselves to be a very tight knit couple, almost as though they are already worried. They talk about being a weird couple, because they spend all of their time together and never get sick of one another. However, I do not think that is too uncommon. Also, this idea that high school relationships end when high school does is so misleading, giving no credit to the love teenagers feel for one another (as though their age makes their love less realistic, less lasting than someone who is older). I know quite a few high school sweethearts who are happily married with children. These are beautiful, sweet, caring stories about two boys madly in love with one another. I am excited to read more of their story, in both the next graphic novel and another short novella. TW: mental illness, sexual content, alcohol abuse, homophobia
