Okay, this book will break your heart, but it will do it so slowly and so subtly you will find yourself in tears and almost forget how you got there. I loved the premise, a once romantic person, turned pessimistic, witnessing the end of all the relationships around her. Her not learning from these 'visions' and still falling in love with the carefree, charming X. He is goofy, kind, funny, good to his friends, but he too has suffered a recent tragedy. This book is also about loss. Loss of innocence, loss of trust, loss of hope. Evie must work on rebuilding the trust in her father and in the relationships around her. She needs to see that sometimes it isn't about the end, but about what happened in the middle that matters. The book is done through different storytelling mediums, like emails, text, etc. This adds to the connections between Evie and other characters, it breaks up heavy emotional scenes, and transitions quickly from chapter to chapter. I also really liked the short chapters, it made reading this book very easy as you get caught in the flow. The dancing in the book highlights the slow trust that Evie places in X, and the healing she does in regards to her family. Each dance makes her more confident, more understanding, and more flexible to change. She is more willing to adapt to the world around her and begins to forgive small faults and accept that she cannot control everything (even when she knows things will end badly). The end was not expected, but I actually think it added depth and emotion to a contemporary young adult romance. It forged layers into Evie's character and the decisions she ultimately makes. It changes who she is as a person, one who realizes she needs to be able to let go of past hurts in order to move on and live in the moment. She also has to let go of what she sees in her 'visions' and be with those she loves in the now.
