Aiden Thomas brings depth and darkness to the tale of Peter Pan. This is not a story of sword play and pirates, this is a story about trauma and shadows. This story is very much about death and the especially devastating impact that the death of the young has on all those around them. Wendy is working through a fear she is unable to process, because she cannot remember the trigger. She knows darkness scares her and she continuously draws a gnarled tree on autopilot. She is trapped in a past she cannot fathom, what really happened? Peter is charming, he seems to care, but there is a magic about him that is fading, coming loose and threatening the world they live in. Who is Peter really, how does Wendy know him, and what is his connection to her brothers John and Michael? I found the whole twist expertly done and truly heartbreaking. But, it logically made more sense than the original Peter Pan (who steals orphans off to his Island). The story did have moments that held it back, just points where it dragged or unnecessary character arcs. It was genius to have Hook be the police officer who keeps questioning Wendy and not trusting her about anything she says. Overall, a dark and different take on a classic tale that includes magic, emotion, and confronting painful truths.
