A little slow paced at the beginning and there was quite a lot of world building and history to get through, but it was such a fascinating and complex world created for this novel. The characters were fraught with emotion, drive, instability and depth. Liam especially showed growth and change throughout, half way through I hated his character, but he became more worthy as the novel went on. Isabeau was understandably confused and angry throughout her transition of losing her life and all of her friends, travelling to a new city and having to cope with taking the souls of other humans. It was easy to sympathize with the emotional roller coaster she experienced throughout the novel. Gideon was intense and melodramatic. At first, he was the perfect foil for Isabeau's new life, but transitioned easily into the dark, mysterious and sumptuous object of desire. They seem to have a connection they cannot place, a past together? Dreams shared? I did find the back and forth a tad tedious and over-written at times, but often I could feel the intense chemistry between these two characters rolling off the page in waves. This is a story that leaves the reader with more questions than answers, befuddled and vexxed. Wanting desperately for there to be more. It was tantalizingly intense and unforgettable. A novel for those interested in old tales, in things that go bump in the night, for the dealers of death and the magic of other realms. There is a lot to chew and even more to ponder. I am excited for the next installment. P.S. This novel includes a smart** cat and I love that so much! I was given a copy of this ebook by The Parliament House in exchange for an honest review.
