KJ has found herself in 1958, with newsboys of the past and a familiar face who may be able to help her locate the other girls. Her story is the one involving the most growth and I really love her storyline with Mac. The newness, how unsure they both are, the obvious closeness and attraction. While fighting against the horrors of time/space/dimensional rifts, they bond and it makes for a touching coming-of-age romance and adds a ray of hope and happiness to a dark story. Mac is facing the end of the world, with the knowledge that her life will be short as it is due to time travel sickness. Hers is the most tragic story of the four girls, but she still exhibits power and she is fiercely protective of her friends. Tiffany has been transported to the future, and I love her story the best. She is relentless in pushing to find and keep the friends she has made. She is smart and full of purpose. She does not accept what is told to her, continuing to believe she can change the impossible. Again, the illustrations are phenomenal and the setups, transitions, and borders are original. The colours bring to mind the 80's, innocence, youth, vitality, adventure, and the future. Erin's timeline is very characteristic of comics of now, with blueish tones, then she shifts into the in-between with Grandfather and it becomes pinkish (the colour associated with the old timers and often bad occurrences). KJ in the 50's is muted, sepia hued, until she meets up with one of the teens from the future, then her story becomes more optimistic blue. Mac is in an orange, futuristic setting, with bright coloured bugs. Whereas, Tiffany's future is a muted yellow, mixed with some of the pinks that are ominous. The messages of this graphic novel are intense, all about the power of friendship. The novel also asks if we have the ability to change our fate, if we know the future is there any way to change it? Who makes the decisions for Earth and what is best? This is a fight between youth and adults, an age old tale of adults believing they know what is best and youth fighting back with their own knowledge of how these decisions are affecting them directly (without their input or care for their safety and future). This was really the perfect, heartfelt end to an imaginative romp. I am so sad that it is over, but am fully satisfied with how the story was wrapped up. These girls go through so much and in the end their dreams, their strength, and their friendship are the most powerful force in this Universe.
