This is a book about taking safety for granted. Forgetting about the bad and assuming that nothing can harm you because monsters were removed. People have forgotten that monsters can easily find their way back when you aren't being vigilant. The place where Jam lives seems like a utopia, but there is a real issue of hiding all the bad instead of learning from the past. Jam is such a strong and courageous character. Even when her parent's tell her to banish Pet, denying that monsters exist, Jam is skeptical. She must to be sure, because it involves someone she loves and she cannot accept that everything is fine simply because she wishes it to be. She pushes her own boundaries, defies her loving parents, and faces her own fears in order to protect those who need it. This is a book about how much love and trust we put in others, but sometimes they can fail us. Jam's parent's, and Redemptions, want desperately for them to be safe, for the bad to be truly gone, that they dismiss their children's fears and concerns. So, it is then left to Jam to do the hard things, the invasive, secretive, dark things, in order to find out the truth. A lot of deep thinking comes out of this book. What is a monster truly? Humans are terribly blind to their own faults. As well, angels (or Angels) are not necessarily innocent, it is humans who wish to portray them that way. Sometimes doing the right thing means doing bad or dangerous things in return. It is also about how monsters are often portrayed as hideous, ugly things in order to distance them from people, when in reality most monsters are normal, everyday people doing awful things to others. Jam and Redemption's relationship is so beautiful, a true friendship in which they can both find comfort. They each trust the other and care deeply for their well being. While they may become angry with each other, they continue to love and fight for one another. A very healthy friendship, one that is not often portrayed in novels, that of a girl and boy just being friends with no underlying romantic relationship. Jam also must take on the difficult task of reasoning with Pet, of trying to make Pet see what justice really should be. We cannot be righteous and seek death, the hunt must not end in killing. Jam is consistent in her belief that there must be consequences for our actions, but also we must reveal truth and learn to grow. This book is at times so difficult to read, so gut wrenching. However, it is also beautiful, deep and powerful. It is a book that is short, but full of meaning. A reminder to never forget the darkness of the past in order to continue to pursue a brighter future. I highly recommend this novel to everyone!
