The Wells family is quirky, typical of the pampered rich, and yet somehow likeable with all their faults (well, except for Daisy's inept and dramatic mother). Daisy is at war with herself while investigating, both determined to find the truth but wanting to be loyal to a family she loves unconditionally. Hazel must be the one to push Daisy, to ask the hard questions, to stay focused and true to their goal. Daisy was much more endearing in this book, which really raised the bar for her character from the last book. She was more understanding, receptive to Hazel's ideas and suggestions (even when they indicated her own family). When she was angry the reader could be sympathetic to her cause, knowing her father is the parent who truly cares for her and her Uncle is the person she feels knows her the best and treats her like an adult with intelligence. This case Daisy and Hazel were accompanied by their friends Kitty and Beanie. The group dynamic really added to the mystery and helped to create tension between Daisy and Hazel. Kitty is an assertive character, who is lovestruck by every attractive man she sees, where Beanie is empathetic to everyone she meets, looking for the good in them, helping the other girls find their kindness. This story was twisty and the murder took place late into the novel. I guessed who the murderer was, but it was still a well thought out mystery and the clues were well placed and the tension perfectly crafted. I enjoyed that most of their solving was a fluke, that they figured it all out by chance, that all their hard work at finding the clues they had was what helped in the end, even when they had not suspected the truth of it. This is quickly becoming a favourite series for me. Both Daisy and Hazel are memorable, and become more loveable as the series progresses. They are diligent, they work hard, and while they may be afraid at times, they try their best to find the truth and expose those who would hurt or kill others. The audiobook is also well done, with perfect narration by Gemma Chan that endears you to Hazel all the more. I am quite excited to start book three!
