This book is heavy with the history of Iwagoto, more world building and new baddies. This adds to the depth of the whole narrative, but does make the book longer and at times drags the story. This is especially evident during Hakaimono's chapters, which felt a little disjointed from the rest of the narrative. I do really like that the book is split between three different perspectives (same as the first book); Yumeko (the kitsune), Hakaimono/Tatsumi (the demon/assassin), and Suki (the spirit of a murdered servant girl). Sometimes I wish I could be in the head of other characters, but the observations of these three characters add to the drama. I loved having more interaction with the side characters (Okame, Daisuke, Raika). I found their input in this second book to be the highlight. Okame continues to be my favourite character, and I am constantly worried for his fate. The team really worked well together, building each other up and helping each other to face their worst parts. Also, the romance in this one, YES! I was here for it and I want more, more, more. Yumeko's character growth was amazing, from naive girl to determined protector. She may fear what is going on, she may not know exactly how she will complete a task, but her determination propels herself and everyone around her into action. It is hard not to love her and she constantly surprises others. There was also more of Suki and the mysterious Lord Seigetsu. Suki's part of the novel continues to mystify and intrigue, I want to know more and am happy with every minute detail revealed. I find Suki is becoming stronger, inserting herself as another member of this little hero squad. She may yet be important to the whole narrative. A great second installment, and I cannot wait for the final book.
