The snippets of Kara's historical romance novel, sprinkled throughout, were a great touch. The story coincides with the ups and downs of Kara and Ryan's relationship. I enjoyed the book; however, I was bothered by two things. Firstly, the conflict seemed unrealistic. Kara's rage was misplaced and I just could not believe how much she blamed Ryan for her own insecurities. Her not trusting him lead to their first breakup, but it had nothing to do with him and everything to do with her having a clingy, needy personality. So, this second time around I felt she was completely unjustified in how extremely she treated Ryan's mistake. Secondly, the amount that the word crazy was thrown around and the subtle fatphobia threw me off. In many instances the word "crazy" was used to describe Kara's actions (even by her music therapist friend). It was very jarring for them to continuously use this term to describe Kara's emotions, instead of trying to understand her. They especially dismissed her emotions in terms of Ryan. Her friends thought she should just forget about a past hurt because he was hot. Kara was a size 8, but she continuously talks about being too big, or loving her body in spite of her mother thinking she needs to work out more. Otherwise, I enjoyed the novel's back and forth between Kara and Ryan. I found her relationships with her friends and family lovely, for the most part, and healthy when she finally confronts issues she has with others and is able to work on her own failings. Especially when she realizes that she isolates herself and cuts off her loved ones when she suffers a hardship. Thank you so much to HarperCollins for sending me an ARC to read and review.
