A beautifully told love story between a ghost and a ghost whisperer. The art style is whimsical and full of bright greens that emphasize Hamal's green thumb and the light he brings to the ghosts. The art also seems dreamlike, lending to a fantastical ghost story. The moments of darkness are jarring, pulling the reader out of this idyllic world along with the ghosts, turning a romantic setting into a horror. Blue and Hamal are adorable together. Enamored, but separated by the fact Blue is dead. Blue has a sarcastic personality, but he is also caring and kind, and he just wants happiness for Hamal. Hamal is quiet and shy, often due to his gift. They compliment each other well. I felt the intermixing of a living world with the dead was handled very well. The flowers forming new growth from dead things. Hamal making life out of nothing. The cemetery being overgrown with greenery. It was a powerful message about how death cannot stop life, how things continue on after we die, and that we in turn help the world to grow. My favourite character, surprisingly, was the reaper. They are hilarious, annoyed by the living world, scathing to Blue and Hamal, bothered by things being out of place, but also somewhat sympathetic to the two leads. They are scary, until they are not. They lend humour to a dark aspect of death, making their profession less ominous. I really liked this graphic novel and would love to read more about these two. This graphic novel sets up future stories really well, as Hamal and Blue take on the business of helping souls pass on.
