The writing is powerful and provides plenty of possibilities, while also delving in to topics of depression, parenting, money troubles, and the depths people will go when it comes to trying to protect themselves or their families. The characters were well crafted, with Anne continuously being a sympathetic lead (even while you wonder about her role). The rest of the characters are at times sympathetic, but at other times make the reader so frustrated you could scream. Marco is especially a problematic character, as he is easy to feel sorry for, but also easy to hate. The detective, Rasbach, is prejudiced against the parents immediately. He does a very cursory look outside for answers, which is the only part I found frustrating and unrealistic. I understand keeping an eye on them, considering the circumstances, but they should be attacking this from all angles. At times he seems capable and at other times he seems like a bumbling fool. This was a hard read, as you continuously worry about the fate of the baby. However, if you are looking for a gripping, well-written, edge of your seat suspense than this book may interest you.
