Tiffy is coming out of a long-term relationship, which she slowly begins to realize was emotionally abusive. She has a great support group, who thankfully are able to help and protect her. She is creative, resourceful, full of spunk and originality. Where Leon is an introvert, she is an extrovert. They bring out the best in each other, while being understanding and supportive. Her chapters are characteristically flowing, with lots of emotion and words. I really enjoyed this book, especially the frank look at a flawed justice system and emotionally abusive relationships. Tiffy is quick to say her ex never physically abused her (out of embarrassment) without realizing he was controlling her and destroying her in other ways. Leon's brother, Ritchie, is going through an appeal process after being wrongfully imprisoned. His experience is heart breaking, horrifying and infuriating. It really highlights how the justice system works well for some, those with money to afford the best representation, and fails many others, those without the funds for good lawyers and who have a checkered past. The love story was so believable, even with it beginning through post-it notes and sharing a bed (but never at the same time). I was glad to see that the author did not just gloss over Tiffy's past relationship, but incorporated the pain and fear and emotional trauma. Tiffy's life is on hold while she works through her trauma, with the help of counseling and her support network. I was so angry and enraged every time her ex showed up at all her best moments to destroy her all over again. It sickens me to think that there are women, in real life, who either lose their support network because of the abusive partner, or have no support network in place, to pull themselves out or escape from their terrifying situation. I highly recommend this fabulous book. The short chapters make is a quick and addictive read, very hard to put down. It has humour in it, a beautiful elderly love story, romance, honesty, and is not afraid to show the dark side of relationships, or the hard moments that we all must work through in order to heal.
