From the very beginning, Olive and Adam's clashing personalities create a spark, her sunshine and love for everything pumpkin spice, his grumpiness and love for everything black. They rub off (snicker) on each other, him learning to be more open about his criticisms of students work and her being more confident in herself and her research. A great pair who push each other to be and do their absolute best, while listening to each other and taking their fears and emotions seriously.
If you did not know this about me, I am a Star Wars fan. So, knowing this is a subtle ReyLo (Kylo Ren/Rey) fanfic had me screaming with joy. It was so well handled too, the characters so in sync with their Star Wars counterparts that I could even imagine Adam Driver's voice in my head as Adam and Daisy Ridley's voice as Olive. Plus, the side characters were also inspired by characters from the sequels, which only made me love it all the more (StormPilot!). At times I did think the book went a little too far into the absurd, but appreciated that it made fun of the fact that some scenarios were just completely ridiculous. I did find that Olive's honesty about her sexuality was well done and Adam listened and was perfectly respectful of her, continuously checking in with her to make sure she was comfortable with everything they ended up doing. And boy, when we got to the spice, Olive and Adam brought it (phew!). I was blushing to my roots, but in a good way. And yes, I did immediately read the bonus Chapter 16 from Adam's point of view (which was also just so perfect, to read how he was feeling in that situation and how he honestly felt about Olive all along). This book was not all fluff either, there were a few tough topics handled. Both Olive and Adam must deal with the ramifications of a student dating a professor, even if they have no professional interactions with one another. The perceptions both of them go through, the anger from other students, the assumptions by other professors, staff, friends. It was hard and many times I was angry for the two of them, especially for the one specific instance in which Olive had to deal with the worst of the assumptions made. Thank goodness they were so strong together, that they could combat all the bad that comes with all the good of their relationship. A great romance full of heart and loveable characters who deserve everything. Enjoyed that every chapter opened with a hypothesis from Olive and that they changed continuously as she went about her life and as her relationship with Adam developed. There were quite a few scientific terms, but not in a bogged down way, more as a reminder that Adam and Olive are super smart (making their terrible lies even funnier). Also, they both maybe find the science talk a little bit sexy, wink wink! And guys, Adam is just an adorkable, clueless heartthrob who genuinely cares for Olive. I really enjoyed this book and if you like a funny, nerdy romance than this book is for you! Even if you do not like Star Wars, you will love this book.
