First of all, the novella has amazing representation. It is an #OwnVoices novella written by an author with autism. Not only that, but Gabby is also demisexual and Jonathan has diabetes, which includes a pump and extra care. Loved how these were actually explored within the novella. Not in a way that pushes them aside or is the only aspect of the character. No, it is a major part of them, but not the only part, and is a part of their daily life which they hope others can love and understand. The bookstore setting added so much depth and excitement to the story. Both Gabby and Jonathan have favourite genres and would continuously bicker about which is more profitable. It was too bad that Gabby did not try as hard as Jonathan did to read her favourite books. She was angry about him belittling her favourites, but did the same thing to him. And, while he took the time to read her genre, she did not reciprocate. My only quam. The relationship and slow burn was fire. How much they both did for each other, both before and after they fell in love. The spice once they finally kissed, wow! This is a slow burn book, but it is a novella so it did not feel like it dragged on or that it would continuously throw something at the couple to separate them. Also, there may have been some spicy dream sequences near the beginning of the novel. I really enjoyed the connections that Gabby and Jonathan had without knowing it; their shared love of hockey, their love of an online book nerd forum, their work dedication and caring natures. I was also happy when a moment I was sure was going to turn into a miscommunication, ending in pages of working it out, shifted to something else entirely. Instead, Gabby came to her senses and realized she was creating a scenario instead of knowing the truth. This scene had me screaming thank you to the author, for actually thwarting the dreaded miscommunication and actually having a character confront their own misinterpretations and misrepresentations of others and realizing that they were in fact in the wrong. Refreshing to say the least. This was just a fantastic short ebook, which has quickly become a favourite and will be reread by me yearly around Christmas. Just loved the characters, their relationship dynamic, their friendships and families and the whole plot of the book. I highly encourage everyone to check it out, especially if you need your heart warmed, and be prepared for some cheese (but the good kind).
