There was no large information dump at the beginning, so the history of the twins is slowly revealed alongside the mystery they are trying to solve. The mystery was very good, and timely. A hated witch is being resurrected to exact revenge on the richest man in town, but is everything as it seems? Or could history have got it all wrong? The pacing was well done, it never felt too quick or too slow. You are learning with the twins and Charlie, which helped to emotionally connect with their characters. They were all very likable, and very distinct in their personalities, very loyal to each other. There were moments of laughter and moments of sadness interspersed with the mystery, which added depth to an already wonderful story. The colours were bright during the day and muted at night. Different instances had certain colours attached to them, to illicit fear, anticipation, anger, sadness or happiness. Lots of reds are used throughout, which links the storylines and pushes a dark, scary aesthetic. I really think that this was a fantastic introduction to a new graphic novel duology and I am quite excited to continue Al and Pete's journey. Both are maturing, learning, adapting, and finding themselves. Together they are a winning team, with the help of Charlie, who exhibits calmness, smarts, and drive, and who is the one both boys turn to when they need an ear, just as she can turn to them. These three, once they master their own magic, will be quite unstoppable. I am very intrigued to learn more about the boys past and what really happened to their parent's, who are suspected to be dead, as they disappeared. The boys were then left in the care of Charlie's parents, David and Shelly (who are magical and mean to help the boys reach their full potential). This is very much a found family trope, the twins being with David and Shelly, but also, Charlie, their teacher, and those they save along the way. It becomes very much a haven for these magical and non-magical folks. All of whom seem to need a family dynamic, which they sorely lack. This is a great graphic novel for fans of gothic horror, witches, the Hardy Boys, Paper Girls, the 60s, nostalgia, and just really fun reads full of heart and punch!
