Greta helps Minette to remember simply by being her kind, trusting, lovable self. She is able to touch Minette's fragile heart and embrace her, even though Minette has lost so much of herself. Hesekiel and Erik show Greta that it is never the journey, but who you are on the journey with that truly makes life an adventure. I really teared up the moment Greta was able to share that very emotional and powerful message with Minette, through the tea dragons memories. What a fantastically original idea, giving the tea dragons the ability to share memories through the brewing of their leaves and flowers. As well, the artwork so skillfully weaves these memories together that they resemble a well orchestrated and composed piece of lyrical music. Truly breath taking. I really enjoyed that this graphic novel is LGBTQ, but that this is not the focus, simply a part of the characters and the world in which they inhabit. Greta and her family live in an accepting mythical society. We need more of this, more stories for young people where this is just normal, where they should see that love is love is love. The novel is broken up by seasons, so you can see the slow progress of Greta becoming friends with Hesekiel, Erik and Minette. It also adds to the beauty of their home, their connection and the illustrations. Spring is for new beginnings, which is where the novel starts. From there, we turn to summer, for bonding. Autumn is for learning about lasting friendship. Winter is for warmth, depth and togetherness. We circle back at the epilogue to spring and the gift of another new friendship. I highly recommend this graphic novel and will be running out to read the rest of Katie O'Neill's work. I passionately suggest this novel for everyone, literally everyone. Especially those who love adorable art, breathtaking scenery, wonderfully crafted characters and a storyline that tugs the heartstrings and begins and ends so satisfactorily you do not need more, but you want more because of the lovable characters. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!
