I did not know how much I needed to read a mystery romance until I was sucked into this book. The story was captivating, while the pairing of Cooper and Oliver were deliciously perfect. I liked that there was so much to the story, that is was not just background to the romance. It is thoughtfully crafted and really digs in to bigotry and hate. The book had me swooning, but also enraged. A heady combination. Cooper has a great amount of character growth. Even with his first interaction with a werewolf almost being lethal, he is open minded and not so quick to judge. He uses his mind to puzzle things out, and unlike his former human partner, he is more about facts than about believing the first wolf you find is probably the suspect. Oliver is super sexy and fantastic at listening and trusting Cooper's lead. He seems to see Cooper's ability and is confident in him. The two bounce off each other well. Oliver is also quiet and unassuming, but his presence has other wolves being obedient. He is persuasive, but he also trusts other wolves and is weary of humans. The dynamics of the werewolf community are interesting and I am glad there are more books in the series so I can learn more about them. I also like that people are actually held accountable for their actions and realize they need to work on themselves in order to work better for the organization. There is something to be said for a government agency acknowledging their mistakes and working with those they have wronged in order to enact actual change. I also liked that the secrets Cooper and Oliver were hiding from each other did not tear them apart, but made them reevaluate how they see themselves and those they initially trust. So, while they might both have lied and been at fault, they both realized that there was a need for the lies and that sometimes their previous actions were faulty. I am quite excited to continue with this series! I want to see more of Cooper and Oliver's relationship, their obvious care and connection to each other.
