Stevie was such an intricate character, very well written. She suffers from anxiety and her descriptions of her anxiety attacks were so bang on, so truthful and I felt it in my core (as a reader who also suffers from anxiety). She is socially awkward and has a hard time when it comes to friendship, becoming easily jealous by Janelle making friends with others. She immediately both dislikes and is drawn to David, who appears to be hiding something from Stevie. She is genuine, caring, and balks at what her parents wish her to be (a "normal" teenage girl). I loved Janelle and Nate. One sunny and cheerful, the other miserable most of the time. Janelle and Nate are flips sides of a coin, pushing Stevie to be the best she can. Janelle is ambitious and determined, while Nate is having a hard time finding motivation for his next novel. Both are incredibly talented and Stevie continuously enjoys their company, while comparing herself to them. I am excited to read more about their endearing friendship. David is an odd character, and I am not sure whether I liked him or loathed him. Which is where Stevie also seems to be with him, so I suppose I was connected to her emotions and confusion. His introduction to her was weird and he comes off both aloof and kind of annoying, but then he goes about doing things that are kind and unexpected. He had me roiling, but also kind of wanting more of his interactions with Stevie. He kept her on her toes and pushed her to investigate both her world and herself. I was a little shocked by the outcome of this first book, and I somewhat wish the mystery would have been more resolved (I am finding it harder to be invested in series). I liked the book well enough to want to keep reading and find out more about both the past and the present. I want to know more about the Ellingham's, their friends, and about Stevie and her circle of acquaintances. I am excited to see her relationships develop, especially with David (who may have had an interesting secret revealed). How will this ragtag group work out the truth about Ellingham Academy? If you enjoy a good detective story, check this one out!
