Yesterday the babe and I spent the morning in Kitchener, as her dad and I had an appointment at 10:30 to see a Daycare Centre. We have a placement right now in a home daycare, with a lovely woman; but, as parents, we felt it was our duty to see what all the options are out there for our baby. So, when we received notice there was a spot at a YWCA sort of near our work, we figured we had better check it out.
Plus, the price is just ridiculous; I understand it's my child and price shouldn't matter, but that doesn't mean you can rip me off because I want the best for her. We have the same level of care with a wonderful woman who will be taking care of our baby, and at half the price they were offering! On the drive back to Kitchener, where my husband parks for work, I decided to take the little one to THEMUSEUM to check out Tot Time (as it was listed online as being about glow in the dark planets). I was super excited, so I went in and asked the girl at the front desk if babies were allowed to participate in Tot Time. She warned me it was painting, but in cases with babies the parents were allowed to participate for them, and that everyone is welcome. So, I paid and went in and couldn't wait to show the little one painting glow in the dark planets. Everything changed when we made it to the second floor. First of all it was chaos, which I suppose I should expect with a place full of kids running about. I moved through the crowds of people and went to the table where the craft was being set up. I took the babe out of her stroller and moved our stuff to the side. I thought about sitting her down, but was worried she would fall out of a chair, so I held her and waited to ask if it was OK to participate. In that time another family came and sat in the seat I was positioned near with the babe, so I had to move to the back corner. I tried to get the attention of the two people working the craft, but neither of them looked at me the whole time I was there. To make matters worse, when the girl finally came over to explain the craft she stood in front of me, so I had to listen to her back. Then, when she went about passing out the papers with the planets on them (and the paints that weren't glow in the dark), she completely skipped and ignored me. Needless to say I was not impressed, so I put the babe back in her stroller, grabbed my stuff and headed down to the first floor and the baby area.
No one was courteous the whole time we were at THEMUSEUM, I felt like me and the baby were in the way of everyone else having their fun. After feeding her lunch, feeling like I was taking a seat from other people and feeling so small, I decided to cut our visit short and not even stop in to the Bob Marley exhibit (in the end we were only there for an hour). If it had been a better experience, I would have considered purchasing a membership and putting the money I paid that day towards the fee. As it was, I will not be going back to THEMUSEUM again, and will not recommend it to anyone I know as a baby friendly, fun place. For $16 my baby got to play with blocks, be ignored by staff, and feel cramped in a small round dome and like we were in the way; no thanks! Maybe when our little one is much older, and can go around experiencing the bigger attractions, we will return; but they will also have to improve their customer service. It's too bad, as I usually try my hardest to love and attend everything in the Region; and I am usually easy going and can find at least one highlight to make the trip worth it.
One nice aspect, on the way home by bus, we met a very nice lady who talked to us about going swimming at Moses Springer. She was pretty cool, and very up front about the loss of her eyesight; I hope I am as friendly as she is when I am 60. The walk home was sweltering, but the little babe was able to pass out, so I guess that part of the trip was worth it. Oh, and seeing Daddy in the middle of the work day was a HUGE bonus! Now to think of somewhere to go downtown that makes for a good excuse to stop in for lunch at Daddy's office...and no, not THEMUSEUM :P P.S. Sorry for the photographs; I had to use my husbands phone, as I forgot my camera.
