We went on to try some other stuff, but continued to only find colouring for her to do...and let me tell you, if you try to take away a marker or crayon the rage comes out...tempers flare...and it becomes the end of the world. The only way to prevent it, show her that she has coloured her hand with the marker (she hates having dirty hands for some reason). So we sat, watched as she had so much fun with colouring, and tried to get a little face-painting...she got 3/4 of a heart until she refused the rest.
With a trip for some sushi, a bit of mango ice cream, and grocery shopping under out belt, we headed back home. Then my mom stayed for a Kung Fu Panda marathon, as she had never seen them and our babe loves them. Was a nice, relaxing, fun Sunday.

This past weekend we celebrated a new stage in my mom's life. She both turned 60 and she retired on Friday, today being her first official day of not working for the rest of her life. I am so amazed at all she has accomplished, how many lives she has touched, and how she has been able to save and use money sense to get to this stage of early retirement.
So we wanted to celebrate, and really do it up in style. I worked with the rest of my family to find a great place to host (my sister's new house), figure out the catering (sandwiches, sushi, pizza, salads, etc.), and get her a present to represent where her life is headed (travel, fun, tourism and time with family).
This past Christmas I took an idea I found on a list, of great gifts to give from a child, and rolled with it. Wasn't sure how the outcome would be, but wanted to see if it would work or not.
I went with a simple enough concept. Find a frame that fits two images. One image would be a photograph of our little one painting, and the other would be an original painting from that photo session. The hardest part turned out to be finding the perfect frame for what I had in mind. I wanted a long wall frame, in white, with white canvas board, that would highlight the colours of her painting and the photo of her. What we ended up purchasing were folding frames, that look like books. We purchased two white and two brown, and they actually turned out to look incredible when we finally filled them. After two weeks of utter amazingness, I have returned to work. Spending those couple weeks with the little one half the time all to myself was just the vacation I needed. Sure at times, when it was below freezing, we would both be stuck inside yearning to be outside, stir crazy as ever. But in the end we would make a game of it. From my little one learning to point out family and friends in a little book we made for her, to her pointing out items in books that she is registering the meaning of. I was beyond words amazed at what she is learning and has already learned. I cannot believe she is aging right before my eyes. One day she wouldn't know something, then the next she would be a pro at it. She was kissing and canoodling our cat like crazy, and my heart was swelling with knowing how much she loves this little creature in our lives. She strolled about with her new backpack on, and gave kisses and arranged the bags at the door to let us know she was ready to go some days. I already miss being with her. But when we returned her to Daycare there was no crying, just a run into our workers arms and snuggles. What was even sadder, she didn't want to leave, she didn't want to come home. Sometimes I wonder, 'Aren't Daddy and Mommy cool, too?' Haha, but once she is home she is happy again, and playing, and cuddling and raining kisses on us.
Yesterday was intense weather, snow like you wouldn't believe, and today it is freezing. -40 with windchill. The privileges of living in cold Canada. I won't complain though, I love it here, and I love the winter (no matter how cold it gets, how icy the sidewalks, you can't put me down). Just looking out onto an expanse of white powder outside the window puts a smile on my face. The little one also loves it; loves walking in the snow, sledding at Daycare, and generally being outside. Yay! New Years Eve we spent going to see the Wonders of Winter at Waterloo Park. They had their 20th Anniversary, and the little one loved it. We missed out on the horse drawn trolley, as they were right packed when we got there and it was too cold to wait 15 minutes for the next one. However, the babe was able to see the horses and boy did she LOVE them. She giggled and waved and screamed in glee. Then we came back home to relax with a spaghetti dinner with some champagne, watched The World's End and an turned in early. That's right, our babe went to bed at 8:30 and the hubby and I were in bed at 11:30. It was the perfect way to kick off a new year. Sigh! |
